I grew up quite close to the border, but I was only 8 months old when it happened (born in March '89), so I don't remember anything. Anyway, it's something that has always interested me. :)

If the US had had another president like Jimmy Carter for the next 8 years Reagan was presidents perhaps it would have been the United States what would have collapse not the Berlin Wall.

True.
Since 1991, people from West Germany have to pay a sort of tax called "Solidaritätszuschlag" (solidarity additional fee, 5,5% of ones gross salary) to cover the costs of the reunification and the redevelopement of East Germany. It still exists today and many people in West Germany are criticising it because they feel they've given enough money by now.

That's right, he had some sort of a role in it. But I've had too many people tell me that "Reagan made them tear down the wall" etc, which is simply an exaggeration. I have no idea why some people keep thinking it was all because of him.

Reagan's polices helped to put pressure on the powers that be to hold that nov. 9 press conference.
It certainly was not 100% Reagan. But he had a role in it. While its size might be debateable.

The next person suggesting it was all done by Reagan gets beaten up with a history book.
It wasn't Wind of Change that tore down the wall, it wasn't Reagans speech, and it surely wasn't David Hasselhoff.
There were mass demonstrations, increase of Republikflucht, and finally that press conference on Nov. 9 where it was said that citizens of East Germany could cross the border from that day on [while it was actually supposed to be Nov. 10]. You really think the credit belongs to Reagan? Geeeez...
